Los lectores que conozcan la obra de David Foster Wallace sabrán que sentía un amor insaciable por las palabras y sus significados. En su ordenador actualizaba todo el tiempo una lista de palabras que quería aprender, sacadas de numerosas fuentes y complementadas con breves definiciones y notas de uso. Una selección de esta lista de vocabulario aparece antes de cada ensayo de En cuerpo y en lo otro.
Una de las cosas que más emocionaron a Wallace en vida fue que lo invitaran a trabajar en el consejo lexicográfico del American Heritage Dictionary. Las definiciones de su lista de vocabulario que se reimprimen aquí aparecen citadas o parafraseadas de esa excelente obra de referencia.
