Crímenes de papel, detectives de cine: «El problema final», el desafío metaliterario de Arturo Pérez-Reverte

Con más de 27 millones de libros vendidos, Arturo Pérez-Reverte se ha convertido en uno de los escritores más celebrados dentro y fuera de nuestras fronteras, siendo conocido por clásicos como El club Dumas, La tabla de Flandes o El capitán Alatriste, todos ellos llevados al cine. No sorprende por tanto que su libro El problema final (2023), una novela-problema cuya acción transcurre en una pequeña isla griega donde se producirán una serie de asesinatos imposibles, haya sido adaptada como serie para Netflix. Un libro que no solo es un homenaje a las novelas de detectives de Arthur Conan Doyle o Agatha Christie, sino que es un libro que resucita al personaje de Sherlock Holmes, aquí encarnado por un actor decadente, pero con mucha clase, que interpretó al detective en la pantalla. Una novela magistral que supone un verdadero desafío a la inteligencia del lector y que al mismo tiempo es también un ejercicio metaliterario construido a base de citas y referencias que dialogan de forma brillante con la literatura y el cine.

As\u00ed le sucedi\u00f3 al propio Arturo P\u00e9rez-Reverte cuando viaj\u00f3 a la zona de Corf\u00fa para \u00abrefrescar recuerdos y escenarios\u00bb y se encontr\u00f3 literalmente con el lugar que hab\u00eda imaginado para el libro que estaba escribiendo: <em><span style=\\\"text-decoration: underline;\\\"><a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.penguinlibros.com\/es\/novela-negra-misterio-y-thriller\/328277-ebook-el-problema-final-9788420476377\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener\\\">El problema final<\/a><\/span>.<\/em> \u00abCada cipr\u00e9s, cada olivo, cada piedra, estaba exactamente donde deb\u00eda estar. Y en ese momento, cual si hubiera esperado a que yo llegara, un rayo de sol desgarr\u00f3 las nubes bajas y grises e ilumin\u00f3 la isla como diciendo aqu\u00ed la tienes, chaval\u00bb. Incluso le pareci\u00f3 ver a sus personajes caminando por la playa. Lo imaginario se confundi\u00f3 as\u00ed con la realidad. De hecho, tras cuarenta a\u00f1os como escritor, a P\u00e9rez-Reverte lo que m\u00e1s le interesa son los mundos imaginarios que descubri\u00f3 en sus primeras lecturas, porque esta es una novela escrita por un lector que ha logrado interiorizar cada frase de sus novelas preferidas. Para su creaci\u00f3n volvi\u00f3 a leer los libros de Arthur Conan Doyle, <span style=\\\"text-decoration: underline;\\\"><a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.penguinlibros.com\/ar\/revista-lengua\/fenomenos\/la-paciente-silenciosa-alex-michaelides-final-tiktok\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener\\\">Agatha Christie<\/a><\/span> o Ellery Queen que le hab\u00edan formado como lector, para de este modo recuperar el esp\u00edritu primigenio de este tipo de literatura policial. P\u00e9rez-Reverte quer\u00eda evitar los t\u00f3picos de la novela negra actual, m\u00e1s violenta, social y psicol\u00f3gica, y escribir una novela en la que se trata, mediante el m\u00e9todo de razonamiento deductivo, de resolver una serie de complejos enigmas \u00aby que plantea un desaf\u00edo a la inteligencia; no a la emoci\u00f3n\u00bb. Una novela que nace del placer de leer y del placer de escribir a partir de estas lecturas que le Es el caso de los dos protagonistas de la ficci\u00f3n, el actor brit\u00e1nico Hopalong Basil y el escritor espa\u00f1ol Paco Fox\u00e0, quienes encarnan en la novela respectivamente a Sherlock Holmes y al Dr. John Watson. Son conscientes adem\u00e1s de formar parte de una macabra obra que el asesino en cierto modo est\u00e1 escribiendo a trav\u00e9s de sus asesinatos, muy literarios por otra parte. Por ello, como dice el actor protagonista, quiz\u00e1 el \u00fanico modo de enfrentarse a las muertes \u00absea vi\u00e9ndolo desde fuera: a la luz de novelas escritas y le\u00eddas. Incluso de pel\u00edculas vistas. Aplicando la ficci\u00f3n para iluminar la realidad\u00bb.\u00a0<\/p><p>Pero vayamos con la trama. Tambi\u00e9n se encuentra en la isla el escritor de novelas populares de cr\u00edmenes, Francisco Fox\u00e1, con quien el actor har\u00e1 pronto amistad, convirti\u00e9ndose en un Watson experto tambi\u00e9n en la obra de Conan Doyle. Adem\u00e1s est\u00e1n el productor italiano Pietro Malerba, su amante, la soprano Najat Farjallah, el industrial alem\u00e1n Hans Ludwig Klemmer y su esposa, el Dr. Kemal Karabin, y las turistas inglesas Vesper Dundas y Edith Mander. Edith Mander ser\u00e1 justamente la primera v\u00edctima y su muerte seguir\u00e1 la tradici\u00f3n del enigma cl\u00e1sico de la \u00abhabitaci\u00f3n cerrada\u00bb, en este caso un pabell\u00f3n de madera situado en la playa que los hu\u00e9spedes del hotel utilizaban para cambiarse. All\u00ed aparecer\u00e1 ahorcada con la puerta cerrada por dentro. Al no poder acudir a la polic\u00eda, todos los hu\u00e9spedes ver\u00e1n al actor como el verdadero Holmes y este no tardar\u00e1 en adoptar el rol con total naturalidad, ya que no solo es actor, sino que posee un conocimiento profundo de la obra de Doyle, talento que le ayudar\u00e1 a investigar el caso siempre acompa\u00f1ado por el fiel Fox\u00e1. No ser\u00e1 el \u00fanico asesinato al que se tendr\u00e1 que enfrentar, ya que despu\u00e9s aparecer\u00e1 muerto el doctor Karabin. Entretanto, el asesino va jugando con la pareja enviando notas y haci\u00e9ndoles part\u00edcipes del juego literario y cruel en el que se hallan envueltos.\u00a0<\/p><p>Todos ser\u00e1n sospechosos, excepto el propio Basil\/Holmes, narrador en primera persona de esta historia de asesinatos aparentemente imposibles. As\u00ed, seg\u00fan se avanza en la lectura del libro, el lector descubrir\u00e1 que est\u00e1 tambi\u00e9n inmerso en un complejo juego de inteligencia cuyo fin \u00faltimo es tanto retar al lector como recuperar la tradici\u00f3n de los relatos cl\u00e1sicos policiales, cuya base son los razonamientos deductivos y la presentaci\u00f3n de pistas principalmente a trav\u00e9s de conversaciones. En este caso, los di\u00e1logos est\u00e1n adem\u00e1s plagados de referencias literarias (Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Ellery Queen, o Thomas de Quincey) y cinematogr\u00e1ficas (Errol Flynn, Leslie Howard, Tyrone Power, La novela juega con la idea de mundos cerrados que funcionan seg\u00fan sus propias leyes. En primer lugar est\u00e1n los asesinatos que suceden en lugares en los que aparentemente el asesino no pudo entrar ni salir, y que remiten a la novela-problema, cuyo misterio suele desarrollarse en un espacio cerrado. El siguiente nivel es la propia isla, aislada por el temporal y de la que tampoco pueden escapar los personajes. Y hay todav\u00eda un tercer nivel: el propio libro, que se convierte en un mundo aut\u00f3nomo que funciona bajo las leyes de la ficci\u00f3n y no tanto de la realidad. Un territorio en el que los personajes parecen estar atrapados y donde existen, piensan y reaccionan a partir de palabras e im\u00e1genes ajenas, procedentes de pel\u00edculas y libros.<\/p><p>Todo en esta novela es por tanto un juego intertextual que involucra a otras obras previas. Adem\u00e1s de lo ya comentado, el propio t\u00edtulo, <em>El problema final,<\/em> remite al famoso cuento de 1893 de Arthur Conan Doyle en el que el escritor intent\u00f3 matar al personaje de Sherlock Holmes (luego tuvo que resucitarlo en <em>La casa deshabitada,<\/em> 1903). A su vez, el nombre del protagonista, Hopalong Basil, se refiere al actor que verdaderamente encarn\u00f3 a Holmes en la pantalla, Basil Rathbone, quien interpret\u00f3 al detective entre los a\u00f1os 1939 y 1946 en catorce ocasiones. Basil Rathbone fue as\u00ed un pionero dentro de una larga tradici\u00f3n de actores que han interpretado al personaje de Holmes en cine y televisi\u00f3n, y que van desde Peter Cushing hasta el de una nueva pel\u00edcula sobre Holmes. El propio Basil dice: \u00abEstaba entrando en situaci\u00f3n, como si acabaran de encender los focos y oyese el suave motor de la c\u00e1mara rodando\u00bb. La confusi\u00f3n entre cine y realidad es habitual en la novela, y se citan con frecuencia pel\u00edculas de los a\u00f1os treinta, cuarenta y cincuenta. Algo que no est\u00e1 tan presente en <span style=\\\"text-decoration: underline;\\\"><a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.filmaffinity.com\/es\/film476943.html\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener\\\">la adaptaci\u00f3n de la novela para Netflix<\/a><\/span> dirigida por F\u00e9lix Viscarret, m\u00e1s centrada en la trama criminal y en la resoluci\u00f3n del asesinato, aunque s\u00ed es cierto que, en algunas escenas, como la primera, se trata de emular fugazmente la est\u00e9tica y el <em>glamour<\/em> del cine cl\u00e1sico norteamericano. A esto hay que a\u00f1adir algunas pinceladas que recuerdan al cine de Hitchcock, especialmente a trav\u00e9s del personaje de Adela Figueroa, interpretado por Mar\u00eda Valverde. Sin embargo, estamos lejos de originales propuestas como la llevada a cabo por la serie<em> Sugar<\/em> (Apple TV+) sobre un detective cin\u00e9filo (Colin Farrell), en la que en cada episodio hay insertos de escenas de cl\u00e1sicos del cine negro que ayudan a dialogar con el cine.<\/p><p>La adaptaci\u00f3n de la novela de P\u00e9rez-Reverte lleva ahora la trama a una peque\u00f1a isla del Mediterr\u00e1neo pr\u00f3xima a Mallorca donde hay un hotel en el que quedan asilados, primero debido al temporal y luego por la falta de comunicaci\u00f3n por radio, trece personajes. El protagonista, Hopalong Basil, est\u00e1 interpretado por Jos\u00e9 Coronado, un actor espa\u00f1ol retirado que en otro tiempo encarn\u00f3 a Sherlock Holmes en la pantalla. Hay as\u00ed un par de escenas que recuerdan ese pasado como actor filmadas con una est\u00e9tica de serie B que remite a los filmes de la productora Hammer, con filmes como <em>La maldici\u00f3n de Frankenstein<\/em> (Terence Fisher, 1957). Lo m\u00e1s llamativo de esta mini serie de cuatro episodios es que deja de lado todo este juego de citas y referencias literarias, de mezcla de ficci\u00f3n y realidad, para centrarse en la b\u00fasqueda del asesino, y por ello quiz\u00e1 donde m\u00e1s falla es en el personaje de Fox\u00e1\/Watson (en la novela un erudito de la novela polic\u00edaca). Interpretado por el actor Marti\u00f1o Rivas nunca llegar a ser un verdadero interlocutor de Holmes, como s\u00ed sucede en el libro. Se ha primado as\u00ed la acci\u00f3n frente a la palabra.<\/p><p>Quiz\u00e1 lo mejor de esta adaptaci\u00f3n es precisamente cuando se aleja del original, lo que sucede en el magn\u00edfico episodio final, en el que Madrid se ha convertido en una especie de Los \u00c1ngeles, y donde, adem\u00e1s de resolverse \u00abel problema final\u00bb, se utiliza la mentira del cine como m\u00e9todo para descubrir la En algunas raras ocasiones un escritor descubre sorprendido que los mundos imaginarios que había creado para una novela existen en la realidad. Así le sucedió al propio Arturo Pérez-Reverte cuando viajó a la zona de Corfú para «refrescar recuerdos y escenarios» y se encontró literalmente con el lugar que había imaginado para el libro que estaba escribiendo: El problema final. «Cada ciprés, cada olivo, cada piedra, estaba exactamente donde debía estar. Y en ese momento, cual si hubiera esperado a que yo llegara, un rayo de sol desgarró las nubes bajas y grises e iluminó la isla como diciendo aquí la tienes, chaval». Incluso le pareció ver a sus personajes caminando por la playa. Lo imaginario se confundió así con la realidad. De hecho, tras cuarenta años como escritor, a Pérez-Reverte lo que más le interesa son los mundos imaginarios que descubrió en sus primeras lecturas, porque esta es una novela escrita por un lector que ha logrado interiorizar cada frase de sus novelas preferidas. Para su creación volvió a leer los libros de Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie o Ellery Queen que le habían formado como lector, para de este modo recuperar el espíritu primigenio de este tipo de literatura policial. Pérez-Reverte quería evitar los tópicos de la novela negra actual, más violenta, social y psicológica, y escribir una novela en la que se trata, mediante el método de razonamiento deductivo, de resolver una serie de complejos enigmas «y que plantea un desafío a la inteligencia; no a la emoción». Una novela que nace del placer de leer y del placer de escribir a partir de estas lecturas que le marcaron.

El problema final es por tanto un libro que surge de otros muchos libros, hecho que se muestra  en la propia trama y en los diálogos, donde los personajes citan, piensan y actúan a partir de la literatura. Es el caso de los dos protagonistas de la ficción, el actor británico Hopalong Basil y el escritor español Paco Foxà, quienes encarnan en la novela respectivamente a Sherlock Holmes y al Dr. John Watson. Son conscientes además de formar parte de una macabra obra que el asesino en cierto modo está escribiendo a través de sus asesinatos, muy literarios por otra parte. Por ello, como dice el actor protagonista, quizá el único modo de enfrentarse a las muertes «sea viéndolo desde fuera: a la luz de novelas escritas y leídas. Incluso de películas vistas. Aplicando la ficción para iluminar la realidad». 

Pero vayamos con la trama. La acción transcurre en 1960 en la pequeña isla griega de Utakos, donde un grupo de nueve turistas quedan aislados en el Hotel Auslander debido a un fuerte temporal que impide la comunicación por mar durante varios días. El hotel está dirigido por una antigua superviviente de Auschwitz, Raquel Auslander, y los huéspedes son de lo más variopinto, destacando en primer lugar el actor, un tanto decadente, Hopalong Basil, conocido por haber encarnado en la pantalla al personaje de Sherlock Holmes en quince ocasiones. También se encuentra en la isla el escritor de novelas populares de crímenes, Francisco Foxá, con quien el actor hará pronto amistad, convirtiéndose en un Watson experto también en la obra de Conan Doyle. Además están el productor italiano Pietro Malerba, su amante, la soprano Najat Farjallah, el industrial alemán Hans Ludwig Klemmer y su esposa, el Dr. Kemal Karabin, y las turistas inglesas Vesper Dundas y Edith Mander. Edith Mander será justamente la primera víctima y su muerte seguirá la tradición del enigma clásico de la «habitación cerrada», en este caso un pabellón de madera situado en la playa que los huéspedes del hotel utilizaban para cambiarse. Allí aparecerá ahorcada con la puerta cerrada por dentro. Al no poder acudir a la policía, todos los huéspedes verán al actor como el verdadero Holmes y este no tardará en adoptar el rol con total naturalidad, ya que no solo es actor, sino que posee un conocimiento profundo de la obra de Doyle, talento que le ayudará a investigar el caso siempre acompañado por el fiel Foxá. No será el único asesinato al que se tendrá que enfrentar, ya que después aparecerá muerto el doctor Karabin. Entretanto, el asesino va jugando con la pareja enviando notas y haciéndoles partícipes del juego literario y cruel en el que se hallan envueltos. 

Todos serán sospechosos, excepto el propio Basil/Holmes, narrador en primera persona de esta historia de asesinatos aparentemente imposibles. Así, según se avanza en la lectura del libro, el lector descubrirá que está también inmerso en un complejo juego de inteligencia cuyo fin último es tanto retar al lector como recuperar la tradición de los relatos clásicos policiales, cuya base son los razonamientos deductivos y la presentación de pistas principalmente a través de conversaciones. En este caso, los diálogos están además plagados de referencias literarias (Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Ellery Queen, o Thomas de Quincey) y cinematográficas (Errol Flynn, Leslie Howard, Tyrone Power, etc).

El problema final es un libro muy autoconsciente que se sirve de un peculiar dispositivo formal. La novela juega con la idea de mundos cerrados que funcionan según sus propias leyes. En primer lugar están los asesinatos que suceden en lugares en los que aparentemente el asesino no pudo entrar ni salir, y que remiten a la novela-problema, cuyo misterio suele desarrollarse en un espacio cerrado. El siguiente nivel es la propia isla, aislada por el temporal y de la que tampoco pueden escapar los personajes. Y hay todavía un tercer nivel: el propio libro, que se convierte en un mundo autónomo que funciona bajo las leyes de la ficción y no tanto de la realidad. Un territorio en el que los personajes parecen estar atrapados y donde existen, piensan y reaccionan a partir de palabras e imágenes ajenas, procedentes de películas y libros.

Todo en esta novela es por tanto un juego intertextual que involucra a otras obras previas. Además de lo ya comentado, el propio título, El problema final, remite al famoso cuento de 1893 de Arthur Conan Doyle en el que el escritor intentó matar al personaje de Sherlock Holmes (luego tuvo que resucitarlo en La casa deshabitada, 1903). A su vez, el nombre del protagonista, Hopalong Basil, se refiere al actor que verdaderamente encarnó a Holmes en la pantalla, Basil Rathbone, quien interpretó al detective entre los años 1939 y 1946 en catorce ocasiones. Basil Rathbone fue así un pionero dentro de una larga tradición de actores que han interpretado al personaje de Holmes en cine y televisión, y que van desde Peter Cushing hasta el más reciente Benedict Cumberbatch.

La relación de El problema final con el cine es especialmente pronunciada, ya que el protagonista, el actor inglés, está constantemente pensando que se halla efectivamente dentro de una nueva película sobre Holmes. El propio Basil dice: «Estaba entrando en situación, como si acabaran de encender los focos y oyese el suave motor de la cámara rodando». La confusión entre cine y realidad es habitual en la novela, y se citan con frecuencia películas de los años treinta, cuarenta y cincuenta. Algo que no está tan presente en la adaptación de la novela para Netflix dirigida por Félix Viscarret, más centrada en la trama criminal y en la resolución del asesinato, aunque sí es cierto que, en algunas escenas, como la primera, se trata de emular fugazmente la estética y el glamour del cine clásico norteamericano. A esto hay que añadir algunas pinceladas que recuerdan al cine de Hitchcock, especialmente a través del personaje de Adela Figueroa, interpretado por María Valverde. Sin embargo, estamos lejos de originales propuestas como la llevada a cabo por la serie Sugar (Apple TV+) sobre un detective cinéfilo (Colin Farrell), en la que en cada episodio hay insertos de escenas de clásicos del cine negro que ayudan a dialogar con el cine.

La adaptación de la novela de Pérez-Reverte lleva ahora la trama a una pequeña isla del Mediterráneo próxima a Mallorca donde hay un hotel en el que quedan asilados, primero debido al temporal y luego por la falta de comunicación por radio, trece personajes. El protagonista, Hopalong Basil, está interpretado por José Coronado, un actor español retirado que en otro tiempo encarnó a Sherlock Holmes en la pantalla. Hay así un par de escenas que recuerdan ese pasado como actor filmadas con una estética de serie B que remite a los filmes de la productora Hammer, con filmes como La maldición de Frankenstein (Terence Fisher, 1957). Lo más llamativo de esta mini serie de cuatro episodios es que deja de lado todo este juego de citas y referencias literarias, de mezcla de ficción y realidad, para centrarse en la búsqueda del asesino, y por ello quizá donde más falla es en el personaje de Foxá/Watson (en la novela un erudito de la novela policíaca). Interpretado por el actor Martiño Rivas nunca llegar a ser un verdadero interlocutor de Holmes, como sí sucede en el libro. Se ha primado así la acción frente a la palabra.

Quizá lo mejor de esta adaptación es precisamente cuando se aleja del original, lo que sucede en el magnífico episodio final, en el que Madrid se ha convertido en una especie de Los Ángeles, y donde, además de resolverse «el problema final», se utiliza la mentira del cine como método para descubrir la verdad.
